Jonha Falls

Gautam Dhara — The Raru River's Sacred 43 m Waterfall with a Buddhist Monastery at Its Base

Jonha Falls (officially called Gautam Dhara) is on the Raru River in Ranchi District, Jharkhand, 40 km southeast of Ranchi. The river drops 43 m (141 ft) over a two-tier granite step — with a small Buddhist monastery built into the cliff face at the base, giving Jonha a unique spiritual character unmatched by other Jharkhand falls.

A Glimpse into History

Origins – Gautam Buddha Legend

Local tradition holds that Gautam Buddha meditated at this waterfall site during his wandering years — giving the falls the official name "Gautam Dhara" (Gautam's Spring). While historically unverified, Buddhist missionaries of the Maurya period did pass through the Chota Nagpur region, and a small monastery has existed at the base since at least the 16th century.

Evolution – Monastery & Steps

The cliff-face monastery at Jonha's base was formally established as a Buddhist pilgrimage site in the early 20th century. Stone steps descending to the base were constructed by the Bihar government (before Jharkhand's separation in 2000). The monastery offers simple lodging to pilgrims and meditators throughout the year.

Modern Era – Quieter Alternative to Hundru

JTDC positioned Jonha as the spiritual counterpart to Hundru's adventure appeal. The falls draw a distinctive mix of Buddhist pilgrims, tribal community visitors, and weekenders from Ranchi seeking a quieter experience than Hundru's 3+ lakh annual crowd. The base monastery's resident monks are accessible for conversation.

Significance

The Buddhist monastery built into the gorge wall at the base of Jonha Falls is the only waterfall monastery in Jharkhand — a combination of natural beauty and spiritual heritage unique in eastern India. The falls' two-tier structure (upper 15 m + lower 28 m) creates a wide natural amphitheatre at the base. The Raru River below Jonha flows into the Subarnarekha, connecting three major Jharkhand falls in one river system.

Festivals & Events

Buddha Purnima at Gautam Dhara Monastery (May)

The monastery at Jonha Falls holds its most significant celebrations on Buddha Purnima (full moon of May) — monks conduct all-day chanting, lantern ceremonies at the waterfall base, and the gorge is decorated with prayer flags. Buddhist pilgrims from across Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal attend.

Sarhul Tribal Gathering (March–April)

Munda and Oraon tribal communities gather at Jonha Falls for Sarhul — Sal tree flower worship and river deity offerings at the base of the cascade. The combination of Buddhist monastery and indigenous tribal ritual at the same site makes Jonha one of Jharkhand's most culturally layered destinations.

Did You Know?

The monks at Jonha's base monastery have lived without road vehicle access since the monastery was established — all supplies are carried down the stone steps by hand. The monastery has no electricity connection and runs entirely on solar panels donated by Jharkhand Tourism in 2018. Meditators can apply to the head monk for 3–7 day silent retreat stays at the gorge base — accommodation is free, donations voluntary.

Tips for Visitors

Remove footwear before entering the monastery at the base — the monks maintain a silent meditation schedule morning (5–7 AM) and evening (6–8 PM); respectful silent observation is welcome.
The gorge steps are narrower but more maintained than Hundru — still use rubber-soled shoes (not sandals); the two-tier descent takes ~20 min and requires moderate fitness.
Mobile signal at the gorge base is zero — inform someone of your visit plan if going alone; carry a charged power bank as the gorge descent and return takes 1.5–2 hrs total.
Morning light (7–9 AM) falls directly into the gorge at Jonha — the natural amphitheatre creates a golden-lit waterfall experience; afternoon visits see the gorge in shade.
